The Sultan’s
Garden


Did you know that the beautiful red rose once
grew without any thorns?

The first red roses grew in a Sultan’s palace far
away in the East.

























The Sultan was very proud of this bush with long
stems, shiny green leaves and beautiful red flowers.



Every morning the Sultan would ride out to see
his rosebush. He would water it and feed it with nourishing soil.
He loved his roses and he would sit and look at them for
hours.











Now a cat lived in the Sultan’s garden. It was
always chasing and catching the birds. It was a very wicked
cat with big green eyes, pointed ears and long, sharp claws.












One day it came across a bird with a broken
wing. The poor bird was very weak and frightened. He asked the red
rosebush if she would shelter him in her beautiful branches. So the
beautiful rosebush stretched out her leaves to hide the injured
bird. But the horrid cat would not go away. If only the Sultan
would come and help! But no one could hear the bird’s cries.













“If only I had sharp claws like that horrid cat,
I could protect you,” said the rosebush to the bird. At that
very moment, the Fairy of the Sultan’s garden appeared. She was a
very good fairy, and was always doing good deeds in the Sultan’s
kingdom. She wore a beautiful gown and she had flowers in her shiny
golden hair. In her hand was her fairy wand.




Leaning over the rosebush she said, “I heard you
say that you would like to have claws so that you can protect this
bird. That is a very noble wish for such a beautiful bush. I
can give you thorns if you really want them. But you must remember
that I cannot take them away once I have given them to you."



The beautiful red rosebush looked at the cat and
the bird and her own smooth stems. She was worried that the Sultan
might not like her so much if she grew thorns, but she also wanted
to take care of the bird. Bravely, the rosebush said to the fairy
"Yes, please give me the thorns."


Suddenly, the fairy disappeared, and hundreds of
thorns appeared on the roses’ stems. The cat jumped at the bird.
But he scratched himself so badly that he ran away and he never
came back.



Far from being upset, the Sultan was very proud
of his rosebush. He thought it was perfect, and he lavished even
more care on it from that day onwards. And that’s how the red rose
came to have thorns.
